The company currently only employs 200 people at its base in the country, but wants to expand outside the US following the sub prime mortgage crisis, reports Sify.
Mr Rao, the chief operating officer of the firm, told DNA Money that around 80 per cent of the hired staff will be local Chinese people, with the remainder being specialists or onsite employees.
He added that the possibility of an acquisition of another company was not off the cards, saying "when it happens, it happens".
The plans for expansion in China follow the company's move to create alliances with other companies in Japan, said the website.
Wipro plans a 30 per cent growth in staff in the Japan branch over the next year, which currently employs 2,500 people.
The technology company has also recently launched a specialist global service management centre in Malaysia.
