Wales to be home of UK's tallest wind turbines

29 September, 2008

The UK's tallest wind turbines could be built in Wales if plans submitted by nPower are accepted, it has been reported.

The UK's tallest wind turbines could be built in Wales if plans submitted by nPower are accepted, it has been reported.

The turbines are likely to be as tall as those built at sea, standing at 137 metres, and will be spread over 2,000 hectares of land.

Visible from Snowdonia and Cadair Idris, the turbines will be able to power between 63,000 and 94,500 homes.

Wind energyconsultant Geoffrey Sinclair said in a BBC report: "The turbines planned for this site are substantially bigger than any currently on mainland UK sites.

"They are similar in size to those that are being built off-shore."

The application to construct such turbines comes as Scotland too is hoping to become the world leader in renewable energy.

Recently, Scotland's wave and wind power potentials, as well as its efforts to join forces with Wales and Ireland, led the country to be referred to as the "Saudi Arabia" of renewable energy.
