Sports complex 'almost completely reliant' on renewables

The developer of a £350 million indoor winter sports activity centre has said that it has found ways to create 75 per cent of the power required for the new build from renewable energy.

The SnOasis complex, to be built in Suffolk, will run largely on renewable energy, Onslow Suffolk has said, after being told to make the development more environmentally-friendly by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

However, there are still issues regarding the planning, as a local residents' group has voiced its concern over the location of the site.

John Williams, chairman of residents and parish group SnOasis Community Alliance, said: "We continue to believe that the scheme is fundamentally in the wrong place and is wholly out of tune with the government's desire for sustainable and environmentally sound developments."

The capability to create such a construction which relies almost completely on renewable energy, though, is particularly interesting for many commercial developers, who may be faced with similar demands from the government over more large-scale builds in the future.
